The Beginner’s Guide to Men’s Waxing in Santa Fe

The Beginner’s Guide to Men’s Waxing in Santa Fe

If you are thinking about waxing for the first time, you probably have questions.

Does it hurt?

How long does the hair need to be?

Is it awkward?

What if I get an erection?

What happens afterward?

Will the hair grow back thicker?

These are normal questions, and they are exactly the kind of things you should be able to ask, and feel comfortable doing so, before booking.

At The Male Room Santa Fe, waxing is done in a private, appointment only setting, which helps take a lot of the nervousness out of the experience. The studio offers waxing, body grooming (expert trimming), along with facials and body care.

Why men choose waxing

Men get waxed for different reasons.

Some want smoother skin. Some are tired of shaving their back, chest, shoulders, or intimate areas. Some want to feel cleaner. Some are doing it for their partners. Some are preparing for travel, summer, a special event, or just want less maintenance.

Waxing can be helpful because it removes hair from the root. That means softer, smoother results that usually last longer than shaving.

It also avoids the irritating stubble that often comes back quickly after shaving.

What areas can men wax?

The Male Room Santa Fe offers a range of hair removal and grooming services. Service options listed on the website include full body waxing, chest, back, shoulders, arms, underarms, legs, brows, ears, nose, body grooming, and intimate waxing options.

Common areas include:

Back

Shoulders

Chest

Brows

Nose

Ears

Arms

Legs

Underarms

Buttocks

Penis & scrotum

You do not have to know the exact service name before booking. If you are unsure, ask what makes the most sense for your goals.

How long should the hair be?

For best results, hair should usually be about one quarter inch long. The Male Room Santa Fe’s website recommends allowing hair to grow to about one quarter inch before waxing.

That usually means avoiding shaving for at least 2 weeks before the appointment.

If the hair is too short, the wax may not grip well. If it is very long, trimming may be recommended first, which we can do during the appointment.

Does waxing hurt?

Let’s be honest, waxing is not completely sensation free. You will feel it.

But most people imagine it being worse than it actually is. Think of a really thick rubber band snapping your skin. The discomfort is quick, but as a skilled esthetician, I can make the process smoother, calmer, and less stressful.

The first appointment is usually the most intimidating because you do not know what to expect. After that, many clients feel much more relaxed.

How to prepare for waxing

A little prep helps.

Gently exfoliate the area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Avoid heavy lotions or oils the day of your service. Do not arrive sunburned. Avoid shaving too close to the appointment. Do not do an intense workout before your appointment.

Also, wear comfortable clothing if the waxed area will be covered afterward.

For example, if you are waxing your chest or back, wear something loose. If you are waxing intimate areas, skip tight clothing afterward if possible.

What to do after waxing

After waxing, your skin needs time to calm down.

The Male Room Santa Fe recommends avoiding heat, heavy sweating, and harsh products for the first 24-48 hours after waxing. This also means avoiding hot tubs, saunas, intense workouts, heavy friction, sexual activity (if you’re waxing any intimate areas, even your butt!)  and strong exfoliating products right away.

Give your skin a little breathing room, it just went through a lot to give you what you want.

Will it feel awkward?

This is one of the biggest concerns men have, especially with body or intimate waxing. It is 100% normal to be nervous - especially nervous about getting an erection. Look, if it happens it happens. It is a normal reaction that most of the time can’t be controlled but it is nothing to be ashamed of. We’re all guys here.

A private studio makes a difference. The Male Room Santa Fe is built around calm, respectful, one to one appointments. Joshua takes time to explain what to expect and recommend care based on the client’s comfort level and goals.

The goal is not to make anything weird. The goal is to help you feel comfortable, clean, and confident.

The bottom line

Waxing is more common than many men realize, and it does not have to be a big deal.

Whether you are starting with your back, chest, brows, nose, ears, or something more personal, the right setting makes all the difference.
